ISIDORA CIRIC (DUBAI)

At just 17, Sofia Faghihy has already carved a niche for herself as a formidable force in climate action and environmental protection, not just in her school but on a global scale. Serving as the UAE’s International Ambassador for Artificial Intelligence, UNICEF Youth Advocate, and a key member of the UAE National Debate Team, Faghihy’s journey is nothing short of inspirational.

Her achievements are extensive, including winning first place in both the International Mathematical Olympiad 2021 and the International Electronic Olympiad 2022. She was also honoured with the prestigious Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Award for Excellence in 2022.

Beyond these accolades, Sofia has made a significant contribution to the scientific community with her non-fiction book “Space Exploration: The New Renaissance”, marking her as a young author of remarkable calibre.

During an interview with Aletihad, Sofia shed light on her role as an ambassador, her path to this prestigious position, and her various initiatives.

Selected in December 2017 for the Ministry of Education’s programme for gifted Emirati students, she undertook university-level courses in diverse fields like mathematical modelling, principles of engineering, design, and astrophysics. This diverse education formed the bedrock of her journey towards becoming the UAE’s International Ambassador for AI.

“And I first started off as the National Ambassador for Scientific Research and enrichment. And from there, I completed a course at the National University of Singapore on artificial intelligence, and I’m now an international ambassador for AI,” Sofia explained.

One of her remarkable projects includes the development of the “flood copter drone”. This drone, equipped with visual and infrared imaging, is designed to function in post-flood environments, generating live updated maps through computer vision and natural language processing. This innovation is particularly critical for developing countries, where flood management systems are not as robust.

Sofia explained: “Applying AI technology to my different other interests has opened up new avenues for innovation. The flood copter drone project is a prime example of how AI can be used to make a tangible difference in post-disaster scenarios.”

Her commitment to environmental issues extends beyond AI. As an eco-ambassador for her school, she volunteered for wildlife conservation in Sri Lanka. She emphasised the importance of young voices in shaping policies and actions regarding environmental conservation and climate change.

Sofia’s message to young individuals is clear: amplify your voices, share your ideas, and take every opportunity to learn and contribute to the global dialogue on climate action.

As she eloquently stated: “Young people’s voices are important. We have crazy ideas, we have crazy imaginations, and we are very creative. Adults should take us seriously, not only hear and listen to our ideas but also implement them in meaningful policy changes.”

As a UNICEF Youth Advocate, Sofia focuses on protecting children’s rights amidst the climate crisis. She highlighted the vulnerability of children to the impacts of climate change and stressed the need for policies that consider their needs and rights. Her involvement in UNICEF and participation in COP28 underline her commitment to integrating youth perspectives into global discussions on climate change.

“Shockingly enough, this is the first Conference of the Parties that includes an outcome or a focus on youth – for the first time in 28 years. And in the spirit of that, it’s really inspiring to see that young people are finally being included in these dialogues,” Sofia remarked, explaining why she deems this COP edition unique.

Another of her impressive technological innovations is the development of a “solar engine” – a project that utilises steam engines that are powered by the sun and recycled wastewater to create a sustainable energy source. This project, along with her extensive engagement in international relations and model United Nations activities, demonstrates her multifaceted approach to addressing climate and environmental issues.

Discussing her book, “Space Exploration: The New Renaissance”, Sofia shared her lifelong passion for reading and her aspiration to contribute significantly to the field of science literature. The book, a culmination of intense research and writing, explores various aspects of astrophysics and space technology. She sees this work as part of a broader narrative, one that signifies a new era of knowledge and exploration.

“In three months, I conducted research, I cited over 220 sources and wrote 170 pages, talking about topics related to astrophysics, space, exploration, technology, and cosmology,” Sofia remembered.

Her vision for the future includes further exploration into sustainable aviation and the potential role of the space industry in climate action.

“And my next book, hopefully, that I’m thinking of writing and publishing after I graduate will be a bit more aviation-oriented and focusing on maybe including a couple of chapters on sustainable aviation to again, bridge this idea of climate change into the work that I’m doing,” Sofia said.

She aspires to work with NASA and represent her country, the UAE, at the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs, reflecting her commitment to integrating sustainability into every aspect of her work.

“My goal in life is to work at NASA and also represent the UAE and the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs. So I hope to bring a spirit of sustainability and environmentalism in whatever I do,” the young scientist said.

In the context of youth development and activism, Sofia credits the UAE for its supportive environment. The country’s focus on youth empowerment, education, and innovation has been instrumental in her journey. She acknowledged the UAE’s role in fostering discussions on sustainable development, technology, and leadership, making it an ideal place for young minds to thrive and contribute to global challenges.

“We’re one of the few countries in the MENA region which has a functioning Youth Parliament that actually implements policies and speaks with really higher level ministries and policymakers to make decisions pertaining to climate change, and also other issues,” she underscored.

Sofia Faghihy stands as a shining example of what young, determined minds can achieve. Her journey, marked by innovation, environmental advocacy, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge, serves as an inspiration to youths worldwide.

Her achievements and ongoing projects not only contribute to the global fight against climate change but also pave the way for future generations to follow in her footsteps.
