Khalifa University’s efforts to improve energy efficiency start from its campus, as it continues its efforts to reduce energy consumption, costs, and its carbon footprint to support the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036 and UAE Energy Strategy 2050.

The university fully supports its students in being active in finding and developing solutions to critical environmental, social, and economic sustainability challenges encountered in the UAE and worldwide.

The ongoing COP28 has been a significant opportunity for Khalifa University professors and their students to showcase the university’s efforts to find solutions for the environment, and to advocate for a sustainable community lifestyle. At COP28, Khalifa University is actively participating in 8 sustainable projects.

Dr. Diana Francis, Professor at Khalifa University and Head of ENGEOS lab, detailed the university’s COP28 participation to Aletihad. “Today, we are at COP28 at the Khalifa University stand, where we are presenting several projects related to climate and sustainability. Some of them are related to renewable energies, and 2D materials to produce water.

"Other projects are related to producing water from the air, and you also have projects on bioenergy,” Dr. Francis said.

“My project is about having climate projections at very high resolution, and this project is aiming to fill a gap in the current knowledge because, for now, we have climate models at 100-kilometre resolution, which is very coarse, so we can’t have accurate data for our region”, she added.

“This project aims to have climate data projections for the years 2030 to 2050 at a resolution of three kilometres, so we’ll have very accurate data entries of temperature, precipitation, and all the climatic parameters for the UAE and the cities in the UAE at this very high resolution, Dr. Francis said.

The university is also collaborating with the United Nations at COP28 through the Khalifa University-UN’s Social Sustainable Development Goals’ Ambassador Programme, which is a co-curricular programme that aims to build upon KU’s membership in the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network and introduce the UN-SDGs to the university’s students.
