Frederick Fenter, Chief Executive Editor of Frontiers, announced a significant partnership with the UN Global Innovation Hub during a panel session during the first day of COP28 Thursday.

This collaboration marks a major step forward in addressing global challenges through open science and digital innovation.

Frontiers, a leading open access publisher and open science platform, has been at the forefront of making scientific research accessible.

“We publish over 200 journals and serve around 2000 distinct scientific communities globally,” Fenter said. This vast network is now poised to synergise with the Global Innovation Hub’s initiative, aiming to tackle a core human needs challenge by focusing on developing the Global Innovation Hub’s digital platform.

“We’re very proud to be a partner. This mission aligns perfectly with our own at Frontiers, which is to make science open to all of society,” Fenter said, expressing his enthusiasm. The collaboration aims to accelerate the research and innovation cycle, developing solutions supported by scientific evidence.

Fenter highlighted the importance of open science in tackling global issues, particularly climate change. He shared insights from a recent Frontiers publication from the Grantham Institute, emphasising: “Our models suggest that if CO2 emissions stop, we can cautiously expect that global warming will also stop.”

However, he pointed out the limitations in current scientific publishing, noting that “60% of the science corpus remains closed, accessible only to those who can afford expensive subscriptions”.

The panel discussion at the UN Global Innovation Hub also featured insights from Stefan De Haas, Head of Co-Creation & Client Consulting at T-systems; Kirsten Dunlop, CEO of Climate KIC; Dennis Pamlin, Executive Director of the Net-Zero Compatibility Initiative at Mission Innovation; and Luis Neves, CEO of the Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative, all of whom contributed their perspectives on the intersection of technology, sustainability, and open science.
