Abu Dhabi (Aletihad)

The 52nd anniversary of Union Day, when all the emirates came together to form the United Arab Emirates, is upon us.

The observance, falling on December 2, will see people from the private and public sector looking forward to going out and enjoying the celebrations and fireworks outdoors in the lovely weather.

The official ceremony will be held at the Expo City Dubai. However, that is out of bounds for the general public until the following day, the third of December, due to the staging of the 28th COP (Conference of the Parties). However, the ceremony will be telecast live on TV.

If you are in Abu Dhabi and planning to go outdoors to see the UAE skies light up along with other fun activities, here are some options:

Sheikh Zayed Festival

The annual Sheikh Zayed Festival returns on November 17 with fun activities in store for families until March 9. On Union Day, the festival at Al Wathba will host a Union Parade alongside special shows and performances at the Heritage Village and international pavilions, folk art shows, military musical performances, as well as firework and drone displays.

Yas Island

The popular waterfront leisure and entertainment spot Yas Bay is hosting a fireworks show on December 2 and 3, at 9pm. Visitors can view the colourful fireworks show by either walking along the promenade or taking a seat at one of the many lining restaurants and lounges.

An array of activities at the Waterfront include henna stations, where talented artists adorn guests’ hands with beautiful designs, and indulge in sea crafts.

Visitors can try their hands at Talli embroidery, a traditional textile handicraft that adorns women’s clothing, and Sadu, the UNESCO-recognised traditional weaving technique in the UAE that is central to Bedouin culture.Guests can participate in Khoos weaving, the traditional weaving of date palm fronds, a craft used to make floor mats and baskets. There will be a photo opportunity with falcons, and learn about the age-old sport of falconry.

Al Maryah Island

The picturesque Al Maryah Island is inviting residents to celebrate Union Day via two firework displays that will take place on December 2 and 3. Visitors can also take a seat at one of the restaurants at The Galleria Al Maryah Island for the best views of the show. F&B outlets at the nearby Rosewood Hotel are also an option.

Etihad Arena

If concerts and music is what drives you, Etihad Arena will host the Union Day concert on December 1, featuring Hussain Al Jassmi, Balqees and Ahlam. Tickets to the 7pm show start at Dh250.

Deerfields Mall

The mall in Shahama on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi is organising the renowned Shabyiat Al Cartoon stage show, running from December 1-3. This beloved performance features famous characters that portray Arab lives and traditions in a humorous and engaging way. There will also be lively and authentic performances by the Alayalah dancers, who will be performing indoors as well as outdoors.

Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental

The five-star hotel on Abu Dhabi Corniche has a full lineup of celebrations planned for the public holiday. From November 27 to December 3, the Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental will light up in the national colours.
