The first dialogue session of the Global Media Congress discussed the role of government communication in raising public awareness of climate change issues, opportunities, and successful experiences, in conjunction with the United Arab Emirates hosting the 28th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28).
The session was attended by Jorge Rodríguez, Minister of Communications of Costa Rica, Suzana Vasiljevic, Media Advisor to the President of the Republic of Serbia, and Wang Yibiao, Deputy Editor-in-Chief, The People's Daily (China).
Jorge Rodríguez said, "We have experiences in Costa Rica in the field of climate change in investing in spaces in a positive way and the pivotal role of the media in shaping the future of environmental protection. As part of our efforts to address climate change, Costa Rica allocates 20 percent of its land as green space to preserve the environment." He added that COP28, which the UAE is hosting, is an opportunity to discuss the challenges of climate change and highlight the outcomes of the conference in this field.
Suzana Vasiljevic emphasised the strong ties between the UAE and Serbia, highlighting collaborative efforts on addressing climate challenges. These initiatives involve media-driven discussions on environmental issues, recognising the significant role of education in fostering environmental awareness and the government's dedicated efforts in this regard.
Wang Yibiao, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of People's Daily (China), highlighted the media's responsibility in tackling climate challenges by sharing diverse experiences, perspectives, and stories to promote environmental protection. He emphasised the creation of environmentally friendly opportunities and a commitment to green development within Chinese neighborhoods and villages.
Wang also underscored the importance of the media sector in spotlighting critical natural resources, advocating their responsible utilisation, and fostering their development through active societal participation.
