HALA AL-KHAYYAT (ABU DHABI) - The Integrated Transport Centre announced the addition of five new locations for renting and operating electric scooters, bringing the total number to eight areas: Al Reem Island, Masdar City, Yas Island, Corniche, Khalifa City, Al Raha Beach, as well as areas within Abu Dhabi Island along Hamdan Street, Al Falah Street, and Khalifa Bin Shakhbout Street.
Electric scooters are considered to be a safe means of transportation. They are part of the “first and last mile” that connects public bus stops with commercial, marketing, service, and residential centres, enhancing the transport system integration and enabling community members to reach their final destination quickly and economically.
The Integrated Transport Centre recently conducted a survey to gather user opinions about the service and measure their awareness of the necessary safety requirements. The results showed that 83% of respondents were aware of the safety requirements and designated parking spots for the scooters.
Users can download the service apps (Tier, Phoenix, Lime, and Bird) on their smartphones to find the nearest scooter and scan the barcode to start their journey, following safety instructions and traffic laws. Safety Requirements According to the regulations for the use of bicycles in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, which cover regular bicycles, electric bicycles, and scooters, users need to wear helmets and lighting equipment and avoid any illegal behaviour that endangers their safety and the safety of all community members. As of August last year, the General Command of Abu Dhabi Police and the Integrated Transport Centre have issued 5,380 fines and over 6,000 warnings for not complying with the necessary requirements and regulations.
Fines Fines range from 200 to 500 dirhams for violations that breach instructions, guidelines, and safety standards, or relate to roads and places where bicycles are not allowed. The regulations for the use of bicycles in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi are part of the efforts made by the Integrated Transport Centre, in cooperation with strategic partners, to diversify transportation means and establish an integrated and sustainable transport system that improves the quality of services available to community members and supports the trend towards using eco-friendly means of transport.
