KUUMAR SHYAM (ABU DHABI)

The UAE booked their place in the final of the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Oman at the Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Stadium in Jeddah on Saturday night.

Othman Camara scored the decisive goal in the 22nd minute, heading in a cross from Mamadou Coulibaly to give the Whites an early advantage. Despite creating further opportunities after the break, including a 56th-minute penalty that was saved by Oman goalkeeper Ibrahim Al-Mukhaini, the UAE defended resolutely to protect their lead until the final whistle.

Essam Fayez was named man of the match for a commanding performance across both halves.

The result sets up a highly anticipated final against hosts Saudi Arabia, who advanced with a 3-2 penalty shoot-out victory over Qatar after a goalless draw. The showpiece match is scheduled for Tuesday.

This is the first major title since Zlatko Dalic took over as manager in August. The Croatian coach praised his players for securing qualification while acknowledging the performance had not reached the desired level.

“We did not play our best match and missed some chances, particularly the penalty, but the most important thing for us is qualifying for the final,” Dalić said. “The match did not go as I expected, but my team and my players secured the win, and that is what matters most. I believe we can perform better, improve our style of play and create more chances. Our performance in the final will be better.”

Looking ahead to the final, the Croatian coach underlined the challenge posed by Saudi Arabia.

“Saudi Arabia are a strong team and will play in front of their home fans, so it will be a very difficult match. I expect a tough encounter and a stadium packed with supporters. We have great respect for the Saudi team.”

The UAE had topped their group with seven points after victories over Yemen and Bahrain and a draw against Qatar.
