KUUMAR SHYAM (ABU DHABI)
An unfortunate late change has reshaped the highly anticipated UFC Fight Night card in Abu Dhabi, as rising light heavyweight contender Bogdan Guskov steps up to face former title challenger Magomed Ankalaev in the new main event on Saturday.
The development comes as Khalil Rountree Jr was forced to withdraw from the Etihad Arena showpiece on Yas Island due to an undisclosed injury. Fight Nights in Abu Dhabi are held in partnership with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi.
Guskov, who fights out of Uzbekistan and is currently ranked 10th in the division, has accepted the high-stakes headline slot on short notice. Nicknamed the "Hitman", the 33-year-old veteran brings his explosive reputation to the UAE capital.
He boasts an unblemished finishing record of 18 victories from 22 professional bouts, including an astonishing 13 first-round stoppages. He is unbeaten in his last five outings.
This main event represents a massive leap in competition, offering him the career-defining opportunity to secure the most significant victory of his professional journey.
This late booking disrupts Guskov's previously scheduled plans, as he had been preparing for a highly anticipated rematch against former champion Jan Blachowicz on August 1, following their competitive draw at UFC 323 last December. The UFC has yet to confirm whether Blachowicz will remain on that August card against a new replacement opponent.
For the top-ranked Ankalaev, the bout serves as a vital chance to rebuild momentum towards another shot at the light heavyweight title. The elite Russian contender, fighting out of Makhachkala, Dagestan, is looking to rebound from a disappointing defeat to reigning champion Alex Pereira at UFC 320 last October.
Prior to that championship setback, Ankalaev had established himself as one of the most dominant forces in the division, compiling an incredible 12-fight unbeaten streak that featured 10 victories and two draws.
The updated UFC Fight Night 282 lineup remains exceptionally strong, showcasing the depth of global talent on display in Abu Dhabi. Alongside the new light heavyweight main event, local and international fans can look forward to a stacked undercard featuring Damian Rzepecki against Magomed Zaynukov, Sam Patterson taking on Santiago Ponzinibbio, and flyweight contender Steve Erceg squaring off against Ramazan Temirov.
Heavyweights Thomas Petersen and Valter Walker will also clash, whilst Cody Gibson faces Abdul Hussein in what promises to be a thrilling night of world-class action in the capital.
