KUUMAR SHYAM (ABU DHABI)

A series of community-focused fitness initiatives are launching this summer in the UAE, led by the start of a Core X Fitness League, as authorities and private organisers seek to maintain momentum in physical activity despite the onset of higher temperatures.

Organised by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC) in collaboration with Palms Sports, the seven-stage league will begin on May 2 at Khabib Gym and conclude on Fahid Island on July 25. The competition will move across a range of terrains and locations, including beaches and urban landmarks, with rounds staged in Al Dhafra and Al Ain before returning to the capital.

Officials said the format is designed to encourage broader participation while offering varied physical challenges. Talal Al Hashemi, Executive Director of Events Sector at ADSC, said: “Through such initiatives, we aim to promote a culture of sport as a daily lifestyle and encourage community members to adopt sustainable healthy habits, in line with Abu Dhabi’s vision to enhance quality of life.”

The introduction of the league comes as the emirate continues to expand its portfolio of sporting events and community programmes, positioning physical activity as a year-round pursuit rather than a seasonal one.

Complementing large-scale competitions are smaller, recurring initiatives aimed at maintaining engagement at the grassroots level.

On Hudayriyat Island, a weekly “Run & Reformer Weekend Flow” session blends outdoor running with Pilates-based strength training, reflecting a growing trend towards hybrid fitness formats that combine endurance, mobility, and recovery in a single session.

Such programmes, typically held during early morning or evening hours, are increasingly being used to adapt to summer conditions while keeping residents active. They also cater to a wider demographic, including beginners and recreational participants seeking structured yet accessible workouts.

In Dubai, a parallel push towards inclusivity is evident with the launch of XX | Her Edition, a women-only fitness event scheduled for May 14. Developed in partnership with the GMG group and its sports and lifestyle-related brands, the initiative targets those new to fitness or returning after a break, shifting the emphasis from elite competition to participation.

The inaugural event will see 160 participants compete in pairs in a short-format functional fitness challenge. Organisers Grassports said the concept is intended to lower barriers to entry and foster a supportive environment.

Hannah Hall, the Grassports Chief Executive Officer, said: “Sports and fitness events need a shake-up. There has been too much focus on elite performance for too long. XX | Her Edition is about creating a platform for everyday women.”

The event is expected to expand into a broader series, including indoor editions during the summer months, aligning with efforts across the UAE to ensure continuity in fitness engagement regardless of climate conditions.

Taken together, the initiatives reflect a wider strategy to embed sport and physical activity into daily life, supported by a mix of competitive platforms, community sessions and targeted programmes.

As temperatures rise, organisers are increasingly tailoring formats, schedules and venues to sustain participation, reinforcing the UAE’s focus on health and wellbeing as a key component of quality of life.
