DUBAI (ALETIHAD)
The UAE Olympic Committee held a video conference meeting with national sports federations on Wednesday evening to review preparations for the country’s participation in the fourth Summer Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal.
The Games, which run from October 31 to November 13, mark the largest edition yet in terms of the number of sports on the programme.
Approximately 2,700 young athletes from around the world are expected to compete across 25 events hosted in three cities.
Officials discussed medical protocols to be followed before departure, during the event and upon return to the UAE. These measures, coordinated between the Sports Medicine Commission and the Games’ organising committee, aim to monitor health developments and ensure full compliance with relevant guidelines.
The meeting reviewed qualification places secured by UAE athletes through various events, including strong performances at the Asian Youth Games in Bahrain where the country achieved a record 31 medals.
Discussions also covered the readiness of the qualified athlete pool in coordination with national federations and in line with allocations confirmed by the organising committee and the International Olympic Committee.
The UAE has competed in every Summer Youth Olympics since the inaugural edition in Singapore in 2010, followed by Nanjing in 2014 and Buenos Aires in 2018, where the country won its first medal – a silver medal in equestrian show jumping by rider Omar Al Marzouqi.
The UAE also became the first Gulf nation to participate in the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, South Korea, in 2024.
