Dubai will host the inaugural BAA–NPH Showcase League this September, offering basketball players across the UAE and the wider Middle East a pathway to North American prep schools, universities and potentially the NBA.
The initiative is a collaboration between UAE-based Ball Above All Sports (BAA) and Canada’s North Pole Hoops (NPH), a leading scouting organisation with a track record of guiding athletes from grassroots competitions to professional leagues. The first season is set to kick off on September 13.
The new league aims to provide a structured route for regional prospects to connect with North American programmes. It is aligned with the UAE’s National Sports Strategy 2031, which emphasises the development of elite talent and international competitiveness, including preparation for Olympic basketball by 2030.
BAA runs youth leagues, tournaments and coaching programmes locally, while NPH has become a key player in Canadian basketball development.
NPH’s system has helped produce several Canadian NBA players, including Oklahoma City Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray. Fourteen of the 25 Canadians currently in the NBA have come through NPH channels.
The Dubai showcase will form the first tier of NPH’s global development model. Players identified in the Middle East will be evaluated and ranked through NPH Scouting before gaining access to further opportunities in Canada’s National Preparatory Association and NPH Showcase League.
From there, prospects can progress to colleges and universities across North America, including NCAA Division I programmes, Canadian U Sports, and junior colleges, with the long-term potential of reaching professional leagues.
Organisers say the programme will not only open doors for UAE-based athletes but also create exposure for players across the region to have a direct link to North American basketball systems.
“This marks a historic milestone as we open a direct pathway for prospects in the region to be seen, ranked, and recruited at a level that has never existed before,” said Tariq Sbiet, the founder of NPH, which is also backed by the Dubai Sports Council and the UAE Basketball Federation.
Belal Abiad, founder of BAA, added that the league serves as a bridge for athletes from Middle East: “For the first time, they will have access to a real stage, supported by NPH’s proven scouting platform.”
