Special Olympics UAE has launched a training camp in Al Ain Region as part of final preparations for the Special Olympics MENA Regional Equestrian Competition, taking place from August 25 to 27, 2025.

This milestone event marks a new chapter in the region’s commitment to inclusive sports, with athletes from 11 programmes set to compete in equestrian disciplines tailored to their abilities.

Events include English riding, show jumping, equitation, dressage, and working trails.

The training camp is the culmination of months of preparation and weekly sessions that began earlier this summer.

It runs through August 23, providing athletes with intensive, structured training to enhance their performance, focus, and confidence on and off the field.

National Director at Special Olympics UAE, His Excellency Talal Al Hashemi, said, “Our athletes are stepping into a historic competition with the full backing of our nation. With the support of our partners, we are building a world-class platform that not only empowers People of Determination but also cements the UAE’s leadership in inclusive sports. We aim for this championship to become an annual event that expands the reach of equestrian sport across the Special Olympics movement in our region.”

The event is made possible through strategic partnerships with key national partners, including the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi as Strategic Event Partner, Abu Dhabi Police as Venue and Logistics Partner, and the UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation as Supporting Partner.

Director of Destination Management at the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, Saeed Al Dhaheri, said, “We’re proud to support the Special Olympics UAE training camp, an important initiative which reflects our broader mission of building an inclusive, dynamic Abu Dhabi where every individual, including People of Determination, can thrive. The emirate has long championed accessible tourism, through pioneering initiatives and infrastructure that ensure our destination, and its many attractions are welcoming and barrier-free. We are committed to creating meaningful opportunities for participation and representation, further elevating Abu Dhabi as both a global hub for international sporting events and a champion of inclusivity.”

Lt Colonel Staff Pilot Sheikh Zayed bin Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, Director of Special Patrol Department for Abu Dhabi Police, said, “Hosting this training camp at the Abu Dhabi Police cavalry stables in Al Ain Region is a meaningful reflection of our commitment to inclusion. More than just providing a venue, we are investing in a future where People of Determination are empowered, recognised and celebrated. These athletes are powerful role models, and we are proud to support their journey toward sports excellence.”

Alongside the competition, Special Olympics UAE, in collaboration with Special Olympics MENA, will host a regional equestrian coaching course during the event from August 24 to 27.

The course will bring together equestrian coaches from participating programmes, along with nominated athlete leaders taking on assistant coaching roles.

Designed to elevate regional coaching standards, the training will combine theoretical learning with practical and on-field application, and will be led by Irish international expert Ita Hayes.
