A 19-year-old Italian cyclist has died after being hit by a car during a training session on Friday morning, Italian media reported.
Sara Piffer was training with her brother in Mezzocorona, a municipality in the northern Italian region Trentino-Alto Adige, when an overtaking car driven by a man in his 70s hit her at about 11:30 am (1030 GMT), according to media including Italian news agency ANSA.
The 19-year-old died of her injuries despite emergency services' attempts to revive her.
According to newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, Piffer's brother sustained minor injuries.
Piffer joined Continental-level Team Mendelspeck last year and competed nationally and internationally.
"With hearts filled with grief, we announce the tragic death of our beloved athlete Sara Piffer, victim of an accident during a training session," Team Mendelspeck said in a social media post.
"Her teammates, the staff and the management want to remember her always with that smile that characterized her. Sara leaves an unbridgeable void in all of us, but she will always remain in our
hearts."
Local prosecutors have opened an investigation into the incident.
