Abu Dhabi (Aletihad)
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the revised schedule for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup taking place from October 3-20 in the UAE.
Dubai and Sharjah will host the ninth edition of the tournament that promises to inspire and connect with a new generation of fans across the globe. The decision to move the tournament from Bangladesh to the UAE was taken by the ICC Board in the recent meeting held on August 20.
Ten teams will play 23 matches, over 18 action-packed days, at two venues in the UAE, the Dubai International Cricket Stadium and the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, as the world’s best battle it out for the ultimate prize in T20 cricket.
Group A includes six-time champions Australia, along with India, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, while Group B comprises Bangladesh, England, South Africa, West Indies, and Scotland. Each team will compete in four group matches, scheduled across the two venues. Both venues will have the added excitement of hosting three double-header matchdays each.
It will be the first double-header Sunday, though, which will involve the headline clash of the tournament – in the group stage, at least. India will take on Pakistan at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in the afternoon start (2pm local time), that is sure to raise the temperature around the world, followed by West Indies taking on Scotland.
Earlier, Bangladesh will take on Scotland in the opening game of the event in Sharjah with that game followed by Pakistan taking on Asia Cup winners Sri Lanka. The 2023 runners-up, South Africa, will play West Indies in their opening match of the T20 World Cup on October 4 in Dubai.
Defending champions and the most successful team in T20 World Cup history, Australia, will start their campaign on October 5 in Sharjah against Sri Lanka.
The top two teams from each group will play the second placed team from the opposite group. The first semi-final will be held in Dubai on October 17 followed the next day by Sharjah hosting the second. If India advances to the last-four stage, they will play in the first semi-final.
The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup champions will be crowned at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on October 20. Scotland and Sri Lanka qualified for the event via the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier that was staged in Abu Dhabi earlier this year.
Kicking off the excitement will be 10 warm-up matches from September 28 to October 1, all taking place at the Sevens Stadium and the ICC Academy grounds in Dubai.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board will maintain its hosting rights while partnering with the Emirates Cricket Board to ensure the successful delivery of the event.
