Serbian tennis great Novak Djokovic has won his first Olympic gold medal after beating Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2) in the final of the men's singles in Paris.
Top seed Djokovic, the record men's grand slam champion with 24 titles, wasted three break points at 2-1 in the first set and edged a marathon service game for 5-4 before spurning set point at 6-5. But he prevailed in the tie-break with a forehand winner and cool volley.
Second seed Alcaraz, who won the French Open in June on the same Roland Garros venue in Paris, beat 2008 bronze medallist Djokovic in last month's Wimbledon final in straight sets to retain the title.
This time the Serbian secured the second set and a revenge victory in a thrilling tie-break to go up 4-3 in the head-to head.
Italian Lorenzo Musetti beat Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime in three sets for bronze on Saturday, when China's Zheng Qinwen also took women's gold.
In Sunday's other medal action, Spain's Sara Sorribes Tormo and Cristina Bucsa took women's doubles bronze after outclassing Czech duo Karolina Muchova and Linda Noskova 6-2, 6-2.
The women's doubles final wraps up the Paris tennis later, with Italian third seeds Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini facing Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider.
