The UAE equestrian team exited the team show jumping competition at the 33rd Olympics in Paris with a particularly bad day from Ali Al Karbi costing dearly to the team.

With judo player Dzhafar Kostoev failing to surpass his second fight of the day, the UAE's wait for a medal continues at the Summer Games in France.

More than 10,500 athletes from 200 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) are competing in 32 sports through 329 events at 35 venues in the biggest sporting spectacle that is held quarennially.

The UAE is participating with 14 athletes in five different sports.

The UAE show jumping bunch was whittled down from five to three in the team competition as Abdullah Al Marri, Omar Al Marzouqi, Ali Al Karbi, and Salem Al Suwaidi came together to compete in a field of 60 riders from 20 teams.

Al Marzouqi, who was the flagbearer for the UAE at the opening ceremony, started the team qualifying round with 12 faults in 76.52 seconds, but rider Al Karbi followed in a nervous ride with 44 faults in 94.34 seconds.Al

Marri kept the damage to a respectable 16 faults in 78.61 seconds to close out the attempt for the UAE.

The total tally amounted to 72 faults in 249.47 seconds, the team failing to rise out the massive setback.

In the judo competition, Kostoev lost to by the narrowest of margins to Michael Korrel of The Netherlands in the Round of 16.

He had earlier won against Brazilian opponent Leonardo Goncalves of Brazil in his first round.

He registered an ippon in golden time after a draw in the regular match time.

With colleagues Narmandakh Bayunmunkh (66kg), Nugzari Tatalashvili (81kg), Aram Grigorian (90kg), and Khorloodoi Bishrelt (women's 52kg) all falling by the wayside, all major hopes of a medal rest on Magomedomar Magomedomarov in the over-100kg weight class.

He takes on Algeria's Mohamed Mehdi Lili on Friday.

Meanwhile, the female sprinter Maryam Al Farsi has reached Paris on Thursday, close on the heels of ending her training for her 100-metre race attempt right before the event. The heats will be held on Friday.

"The focus was on enhancing her technical readiness for the Olympics," Brigadier General Dr. Mohammed Al Mur, President of the UAE Athletics Federation, said through a statement released by the NOC.

"We are keen to prepare her and provide all the requirements to grant her the needed confidence. We are highly confident that her participation will serve as a significant and inspiring motivation for UAE track and field athletes to reach the Olympic Games in the coming years."

"There are many development programmes that the federation is working on, including organising championships, cooperating with clubs, providing comprehensive preparation opportunities through local and international camps, participating in external championships, honing capabilities, and exchanging experiences with other countries, in addition to hosting regional and international championships. Our strategic goal is to build a robust base of players with high skills and abilities to raise the country's flag in external events," he said.

The race features 36 sprinters in four rounds, with nine sprinters in each heat.

The top three in each round and the next five fastest times will advance to the next round.

American Griffith Joyner Florence holds the world record in the 100-metre race with a time of 10.49 seconds, set at the 1988 World Championships in Indianapolis, USA, while Jamaican Thompson-Herah Elaine holds the Olympic record at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with a time of 10.61s.

Abdulrahman Suleiman, the technical director of the UAE Athletics Federation, confirmed Al Farsi's readiness for the race, noting that the camp she concluded in Egypt achieved many gains, focusing on the most important physical and technical aspects.

He emphasised that Maryam consistently achieves personal best in every race, holding the state record for both junior and youth stages in the 100-metre race with a time of 13.04 seconds.
