Grandmaster Salem Abdul Rahman Saleh, representing the UAE national team and the Sharjah Cultural Chess Club, scooped the gold medal in the Challengers Triathlon (GMT-Challengers tournament).
Notably, the tournament took place for the first time as part of the 2024 Biel International Chess Festival.
Saleh, the first winner of the tournament, delivered an outstanding performance across 22 games, scoring nine points in Sunday's blitz, six points in rapid, and 20.5 in classical, to reach a total of 35.5 points.
The Challengers Triathlon comprises two sections.
Section A, known as round robin, includes five classical games, five rapid (reversed colours) and 10 blitz (double round-robin).
Meanwhile, in Section B, the first four players (only the first three if the 4th is more than 12 points behind the first) at the end of section A face each other in classical time control with reversed colours compared to round robin of section A.
