Abu Dhabi will host the world’s most exciting racing on water – the Sail Grand Prix – for the first time as the best athletes representing national teams from the globe descending for the two-day race in January. The event is presented by SailGP Global Series partner Mubadala Investment Group and the Abu Dhabi Sports Council.
With the Season 4 schedule already underway, SailGP heads to the UAE capital as one of the world’s fastest growing sports leagues. Fans will get to witness 10 teams going head-to-head on the coastal arena around Abu Dhabi on January 13 and 14, and tickets have gone out for sale. The high-speed foiling F50 catamarans will vie for points across five races before a final showdown featuring the top-three teams to decide the winner.
The announcement was made at a press conference at the Saadiyat Beach Club, in the presence of Sheikh Ahmed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, President of the Emirates Modern Sailing and Rowing Federation, Aref Al Awani, General Secretary of Abu Dhabi Sport Council, Mansour Al Ketbi, Executive Director of Digital and Corporate Services at Mubadala Investment Company and representative for Mubadala Foundation, and Russell Coutts, CEO of SailGP, among others.
Abu Dhabi will be the sixth stop on a global calendar comprising 12 events and covering places such as New York, Los Angeles, Sydney, Auckland, Chicago and San Francisco. National teams from Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States will be in contention.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, President of the Emirates Modern Sailing and Rowing Federation, said: “We appreciate the efforts of the organiser, such as the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, Mubadala, and we are happy that Abu Dhabi will be a new theatre for a major international event.”
His Excellency Aref Hamad Al Awani, General Secretary of Abu Dhabi Sport Council, said: “This is a testament to the capital’s infrastructure and huge potential.”
