Seventy-nine people were injured in Slovakia when two passenger trains collided near the capital Bratislava, authorities said on Monday.

No one is in life-threatening condition following the accident on Sunday evening. The injured were taken to multiple hospitals, the ambulance service said.

Preliminary reports indicate that a regional express train ignored a stop signal and entered the track toward Bratislava, where it was struck by a high-speed train, the state railway company ZSR said.

The exact circumstances of the accident are still under investigation, ZSR General Director Ivan Bednárik told the TASR news agency.

Public broadcaster STV reported that around 800 passengers were on the two trains, citing a figure given by Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok.

Many of the passengers were students returning to the capital from their hometowns on Sunday evening, STV said.
