Egypt plans to host an international summit on Gaza after a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas came into force under a US peace plan.

The summit, to take place in Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, will be co-chaired by US President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Atti and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed in a phone call arrangements of the summit and international participation, the ministry added in a statement. No specific date of the meeting or further details were given.

Several European and Arab leaders are expected to attend the summit, according to media reports.

Al-Sissi has invited German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to attend a ceremony in Egypt for a signing ceremony on the Gaza agreement.

Trump has already signalled interest in travelling to Egypt for the signing ceremony.

But the president, who had indicated that he may travel to the Middle East as early as Sunday, did not specify dates for the individual stops on his trip.

The ceasefire - marking the first step in a wider US plan for a complete end to two years of devastating war - took effect on Friday.

The deal includes the release of all hostages and the withdrawal of Israeli forces to a mutually agreed line in the coastal territory.
