An 88-year-old woman in the Czech Republic was mistakenly declared dead and woke up after being placed in a coffin, the Pravo newspaper reported on Monday.

According to the report, an elderly man in the western city of Pilsen called the emergency services on Friday morning, saying he could not wake his partner, who appeared to have died. A coroner was called and pronounced the woman dead.

However, when employees of a funeral home later placed the supposed corpse in a coffin, the elderly woman opened her eyes.

The employees alerted the emergency services, who took the woman to hospital, where she was placed under observation. She is said to be doing well considering her age and previous illnesses.

The police launched an investigation against the coroner on suspicion of failure to render assistance, a spokeswoman said.

The company that provided the coroner expressed its regret and said there would be consequences.
