Five people have been shot at a school in southern Sweden, including the alleged perpetrator, police said during a press conference broadcast on Swedish television on Tuesday afternoon.

The shooting happened around midday at an adult education centre in the city of Örebro, about 160 kilometres west of Stockholm.

Örebro police chief Roberto Eid Forest said during the press conference that the alleged attacker was a man.

He did not initially provide any information about the suspect's condition or the extent of his injuries.

Swedish broadcaster SVT reported that several people had been killed and about 15 injured. Other Swedish media outlets reported that the alleged perpetrator was dead. The police have not confirmed this.

Jonas Claesson, the director of public health in the region, said five people have been injured and taken to hospital.

Four of them have since undergone surgery, Claesson said at the press conference, with two in stable condition.

Numerous police officers and emergency responders have been deployed to the school, local media reported.

Police said the students are being cared for at the school at the Risbergska campus as well as at neighbouring schools.
