Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Monday confirmed an outbreak of the Marburg virus in the east African country, with one confirmed case so far.

"Laboratory tests conducted at Kabaile Mobile Laboratory in Kagera and later confirmed in Dar es Salaam, identified one patient as being infected by Marburg virus," she said at a press conference that was also attended by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in Dodoma, a town in the country's north.

Last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) report revealed that patients, including healthcare workers in Tanzania, were among the suspected cases and were being monitored.

The health agency stated: "The reporting of suspected MVD cases from two districts suggests geographic spread.
