Vienna police stepped up their presence at the Austrian capital's Christmas markets on Saturday, after a deadly car ramming attack in Germany killed five people and wounded more than 200.
On Friday night, an SUV ploughed through the festive crowd at a Christmas market in Germany's eastern city of Magdeburg, with authorities arresting a doctor at the scene.
"Due to the incident in Magdeburg, which is not in any way linked to Austria, it was decided that police will intensify its presence across Vienna with a focus on the city's Christmas markets from Saturday," press spokesman David Pawlik told AFP.
Pawlik said there is "no specific threat" of an attack in Vienna, adding that Austrian authorities are in close contact with their German colleagues.
Security measures at Christmas markets in several other Austrian provinces including Upper Austria, Lower Austria and Burgenland were also increased.
