A small plane crashed in a mountainous area in Costa Rica on Monday, killing five of the six people on board. Emergency crews had reached the survivor, the local Red Cross said.

The Cessna 206 Station air crashed early Monday afternoon, The Associated Press reported, citing Costa Rica’s civil aviation agency. The Costa Rican Red Cross said the six people on board included a family, the pilot and the co-pilot.

The Red Cross said on social media late Monday that a 31-year-old woman was the only survivor of the crash in the Pico Blanco area, and that they were working to rescue her. The area is southwest of the capital, San José.

The Red Cross had posted footage of a crew walking through dense jungle at night, saying that more than 40 emergency workers were trying to reach the crash site. The search crew included a canine unit, it said.

The civil aviation agency did not immediately respond to inquiries about the crash.
