Vice President Kamala Harris was preparing to deliver a concession speech at 4 p.m. Eastern time, after calling President-elect Donald Trump to concede. President Joe Biden has called both candidates and plans to address the country Thursday.

Trump clinched the presidency just after 5:30 a.m. Wednesday when he won Wisconsin, capping a remarkable political comeback four years after being voted out of office.

Republicans secured control of the Senate for the first time in four years, but one embattled Democrat, Sen. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, held her seat in a state carried by Trump.

Harris’ speech will be at Howard University.

Harris prepared to publicly concede defeat to Trump on Wednesday afternoon, hours after she called her often bitter rival to congratulate him on winning the election, a senior campaign aide said. She emphasised the importance of a peaceful transfer of power and being a president for all Americans.

Steven Cheung, a Trump campaign spokesperson, said the president-elect had acknowledged Harris’ "strength, professionalism and tenacity.”

She is expected to give her concession speech at her alma mater, Howard University in Washington, where her disappointed supporters left her watch party in silence in the early morning hours.
