URUMQI (WAM)

Media personnel from around the globe convened in Xinjiang, northwest China, on Monday to explore the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence (AI).

As the 6th World Media Summit unfolded in Urumqi, the capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, over 500 delegates from 106 countries and regions convened to discuss "AI and Media Transformation."

Representatives from 208 institutions, including media outlets, government agencies, and international organisations, engaged in discussions highlighting AI's transformative impact on the global media industry.

They examined the evolving role and responsibilities of the media in this technological revolution.

The summit issued a joint statement emphasising the importance of responsibly adopting AI technologies while maintaining journalistic ethics and professional standards.

The statement called for increased collaboration within the global media sector to share advancements in AI development, fostering high-quality development worldwide.

Media leaders highighted the importance of AI-driven innovation, a perspective echoed in a global survey conducted by Xinhua Institute, a think tank under Xinhua.

The survey revealed that over half of the interviewed media organisations have already integrated generative AI into their operations.

According to the report, technologies such as algorithmic recommendations, voice interaction, and image generation are increasingly being applied across various stages of news collection, production, distribution, reception, and feedback.

This year's summit is jointly organised by Xinhua and the Xinjiang regional government.
