German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Monday promised to tighten laws on the carrying of deadly weapons, days after three people were killed in a knife attack in the western city of Solingen.

"This should and will happen very quickly," Scholz said on a visit to the city.  Scholz said he was sure that a draft bill would be quickly approved in the German parliament.

The attack on Friday took place at a market square in Solingen's city centre during the Festival of Diversity, which was being thrown to celebrate the city's 650th anniversary.

Three people were killed and eight others injured, with the 26-year-old suspect subsequently remanded in custody by order of an investigating judge.
