The UAE stressed the importance of including a call for an immediate ceasefire in all upcoming draft resolutions during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meeting, the country said on Tuesday, noting that a ceasefire is the "only way" to stop the ongoing catastrophe in Gaza.
His Excellency Mohamed Abushahab, Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations in New York, delivered the UAE statement at the Assembly meeting on the use of the power of veto.
Highlighting the dire need for immediate action to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the region, the UAE underscored the importance of adopting measures that call for an immediate cessation of hostilities.
"During today's UN General Assembly meeting on the use of the veto, the UAE emphasised that any draft resolution from the Council must include a call for an immediate ceasefire. Ending the war on Gaza is the only way to address its catastrophic consequences," the UAE Permanent Mission to the UN wrote on its official X account.
The country welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2728, which demands an immediate ceasefire throughout the holy month of Ramadan, the first resolution to include a stipulation of that kind.
"The UAE stressed that the Council must ensure that parties to the conflict implement resolutions 2712, 2720 and 2728, protect civilians and humanitarian workers, as well as allow for the urgent, at-scale and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid into Gaza," the X post added.
UN Security Council Resolution 2728 stands out as a significant diplomatic achievement, aiming to bring about an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during Ramadan. This initiative reflects the international community's recognition of the importance of respecting cultural and religious periods as opportunities for peace and reflection.
Resolutions 2712 and 2720, which precede 2728, form part of a series of efforts by the UN Security Council to address the ongoing conflict in Gaza, focusing on various aspects of the crisis including the protection of civilians, support for humanitarian aid, and the promotion of peace negotiations.
The UAE's leadership in advocating for these resolutions underscores its commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East. As the international community rallies behind these measures, the hope for a durable resolution to the conflict in Gaza grows, emphasising the importance of collaborative efforts to achieve lasting peace and security in the region.
