Shaban Bilal (Cairo) - The Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza has resumed operations for foreigners, dual nationals, and injured Palestinians after being closed for the past two days.
This comes as part of an agreement between Egypt and Israel, coordinated with the United States, to support the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and the exit of foreigners.
Wael Abu Omar, a spokesperson for the Rafah Crossing on the Palestinian side, told Aletihad that the crossing resumed operations on Sunday, and began allowing passage for nationals of foreign countries and injured Palestinians based on lists received from the Egyptian side.
Abu Omar explained that the crossing’s closure over the past two days was due to the lack of coordination for the transfer of wounded Palestinians from Gaza to Egypt for treatment in Egyptian hospitals. He noted that the passage of humanitarian aid continues but has been limited in recent days.
The Rafah Crossing official mentioned that the crossing operated for only eight days, from Wednesday, November 1, to Sunday, November 12. During this period, 2,734 foreign nationals, 122 injured, 97 escorts to the injured, 16 patients, and 14 patients’ escorts passed through.
According to Egyptian officials, the operation of the Rafah border crossing comes within the framework of an agreement between Egypt and Israel, mediated by the United States, to evacuate approximately 7,000 foreigners from Gaza, where 60 different nationalities are currently situated.
On the Egyptian side, the Egyptian authorities and medical teams continue their intensive work, providing diagnostic and therapeutic services to injured Palestinians and transferring them to hospitals in Sinai.
They also conduct medical examinations on foreign nationals and vaccinate their children against polio, measles, and mumps.
