Widespread condemnation of Jabalia refugee camp attack

Airstrikes hit a crowded Palestinian refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, killing and injuring hundreds

Ahmed Atef (Cairo) - Several countries and international organisations strongly condemned the Israeli army’s targeting of the Jabalia Camp in Gaza, as international calls to de-escalate the situation and deliver humanitarian aid to the besieged sector increase. Israeli airstrikes hit a crowded Palestinian refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, killing and injuring hundreds.

Medics struggled to treat the injured and were forced to set up operating rooms in hospital corridors. In Wednesday’s statement from the General Secretariat of the Muslim World League, the Secretary-General and Chairman of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, Dr. Muhammad bin Abdul Karim Issa, denounced “this dangerous escalation, which claimed the lives of a number of innocent civilians”.

He called on the international community to “take responsibility for protecting civilians from collective punishment”. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia strongly condemned the attack. In a statement, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the Kingdom’s total rejection of the repeated targeting of civilian-populated areas and the continued violation of international laws.

This comes in light of the international community’s failure to pressure the Israeli government to accept the immediate cessation of hostilities and the humanitarian truce, according to the Saudi Press Agency. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia affirmed that “the dangerous humanitarian situation resulting from the continuous escalation cannot be justified at all”.

Furthermore, stopping the bloodshed, protecting civilians, and stopping military operations are urgent priorities that cannot accept any procrastination or obstruction, and immediate non-compliance will inevitably lead to a humanitarian disaster, the Kingdom added.

Pakistani Prime Minister Anwar Ul Haq Kakar strongly condemned the escalation of hostilities and aggression against civilians in the Gaza Strip. Kakar called on the international community to act now to end this tragedy.

Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said on Wednesday that he was “appalled” by the Israeli bombing of the Jabalia refugee camp in Gaza and called on the parties to respect the international law.

In a statement published on the X social media platform, he wrote: “I am appalled by the large number of victims following the Israeli bombing of the Jabalia refugee camp.” In turn, Jordanian political analyst Dr. Amer Al Sabaileh called for intensifying international pressure to stop the war in Gaza amid fears of its expansion, noting that intensifying international communication will increase the possibility of obtaining a truce for the delivery of humanitarian supplies.

Al Sabaileh told Aletihad that the proposed truce could push forward the peace process and negotiations to halt the war. He mentioned that the world realises that the war in the Middle East will harm everyone.

Specialist in international relations Ornella Sack, explained that although international positions fluctuate, the world now realises that the Palestinian issue must be settled with a just, two-state solution. Sack told Aletihad that the cost of war is difficult for everyone.

None of the regional and international countries want to slide into a war that may endanger eveyone’s interests, she added. Sack pointed out that the international community must adhere to political and diplomatic solutions to ensure the well-being of the people.
