Large, colourful bunches of dates stood proudly beside baskets of semi-ripened fruit, welcoming curious onlookers to the inaugural Al Ain Rutab Festival. Amid the enchanting rhythms of the UAE's traditional Al Ayyala performance, Al Ain's Al Sarooj Park came to life as the week-long celebration of rutab and Emirati heritage got underway.
The vibrant displays of freshly harvested semi-ripened dates and handcrafted palm products captivated visitors and quickly became a backdrop for selfies and family photographs.
Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in Al Ain Region, the festival spotlights the rutab – fresh, partially ripened dates – and immerses visitors in experiences that showcase the importance of the palm tree in UAE culture.
The festival also features markets and sections that highlight the UAE's agricultural heritage, farmers and productive families, offering visitors an immersive experience of the cultural importance of the palm tree.
Salem Al Blooshi, a volunteer at the festival, sees the event as a meeting point of heritage, agriculture and tradition, enriching visitors with insights and hands-on discoveries throughout their tour of the park.
"Al Ain Rutab Festival is really amazing. I learned a lot about the different types of rutab and the date competitions. I also enjoyed seeing large palm fronds and bunches of dates on display," Al Blooshi told Aletihad.
"For me, this festival represents Emirati heritage, agriculture and tradition. It's a great place to learn about our local culture and support farmers."
At the pavillion of Al Ain City Municipality, an interactive experience narrated the story of Al Ain Oasis. Here, young visitors enjoyed learning about the date palm - from climbing trees to harvesting dates, caring for palms and sustainable agriculture practices.
Al Ain Oasis is home to more than 147,000 date palms, comprising over 100 varieties.
For Hamad Zayed, a final-year high school student, the festival offered a first-hand look at the UAE's agricultural past and the enduring legacy of the palm tree.
"Al Ain Rutab Festival is unique. It showcases the Emirati heritage through an engaging and enjoyable experience."
The festival, which kicked off on July 25, runs until July 31.
