The UAE marks the International Day of Families 2026 by continuing to highlight the goals of the country’s “Year of Family” initiative, which focuses on strengthening family bonds, promoting well-being, and encouraging stronger communication within households across the nation.

During the first five months of 2026, family-centred initiatives were organised across the UAE through schools, community organisations, cultural institutions, and local events. The activities aimed to encourage families to spend more time together and reinforce the values of unity, compassion, and social connection that remain central to Emirati society.

The International Day of Families, annually observed on May 15, served as an opportunity to reflect on the role of families in building strong communities and supporting social stability, especially at a time when modern lifestyles and technology continue to reshape daily life.

Emirati families who participated in family-focused activities said the initiative had a positive impact on their relationships and communication at home.

Meitha Abdullah said the International Day of Families strongly reflects the UAE’s vision during the “Year of Family”, noting that it highlights the importance of family unity and the role of parents and children in building a connected society.

She explained that many school-led initiatives encouraged family participation through interactive activities, videos, and projects completed at home.

“The initiatives strengthened the family environment and increased participation between all family members,” she said.

According to Meitha, the programmes also encouraged families to spend more meaningful time together and reminded parents of the importance of maintaining close relationships with their children despite busy schedules and increasing digital distractions.

Hanan Abdullah described family support as one of the most important sources of comfort and reassurance in today’s fast-changing world. She said family activities during the first half of the year helped create stronger emotional connections between relatives.

“Family support creates comfort and reassurance,” she said. “We became closer and understood each other better.”

She added that activities such as family competitions, games, and preparing meals together encouraged communication and helped strengthen bonds between family members in a relaxed and positive environment.

Meanwhile, Waleed Al Obthani said the “Year of Family” initiative encouraged many households to prioritise quality time together and focus more on communication and mutual understanding.

“A strong family is the foundation of a strong society,” he said. “Even simple habits like eating together or limiting screen time during family hours made a noticeable difference in strengthening our bond.”

He also stressed the importance of maintaining strong family relationships in a rapidly evolving digital world, explaining that technology can sometimes reduce direct interaction between family members if not balanced carefully.
