A wristwatch from the collection of US film director Francis Ford Coppola has fetched a record price at an auction in New York, the Phillips auction house said on Saturday.
An anonymous phone bidder bought the F.P. Journe FFC Prototype for $10.8 million.
This was the highest price yet achieved at auction for a wristwatch by Swiss maker F.P. Journe, Phillips said. It was also a world auction record for a watch made by an independent manufacturer. The estimate had been $1 million.
"The Godfather" director, 86, received the platinum watch in 2021 from the watchmaker François-Paul Journe.
Oscar-winner Coppola - who also directed "Apocalypse Now" - offered up seven luxury watches from his private collection at the two-day auction.
In an interview with the New York Times, Coppola had cited financial constraints as the reason for selling the collectables.
Coppola invested over $100 million in his long-cherished passion project "Megalopolis," but the 2024 film flopped and brought in only a fraction of the costs.
