Frank Gehry, whose daring and whimsical creations of leaning towers and sweeping sheets of curved metal such as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, made him a superstar in the world of architecture, died on Friday at the age of 96, the New York Times said.

Born in Toronto to Polish-Jewish immigrants in 1929, Gehry became one of the most celebrated architects of his time, perhaps best known for the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, where he moved with his family as a teenager.

Taking night classes while working as a truck driver during the day, a teacher noted his interest in architecture and pushed him to pursue a career in the field.

Gehry founded his first own architecture studio in Los Angeles.

His masterpieces also include the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris and the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial in Washington.

Gehry also designed residential buildings in Prague, New York and many other cities.

He continued to work on designs and projects until the very end.
