Al Jahili Fort Al Ain is hosting the Al Jahili Traditional Games Championships, offering the public a glimpse into the recreational activities of the past.

Held during Ramadan, and running until March 15 from 9pm until 12am, the four-day event is organised by the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi.

One of the largest forts in the UAE, Al Jahili Fort is a cultural centre and tourist attraction.

Yaser Al Neyadi, Public Engagement Unit Head, Culture Site Management, at the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi, said the event aims to promote the long-term preservation of cultural heritage. It also encourages developing innovative ways to preserve it and pass onto future generations.

“While traditional games are often held as part of larger festivals, this event is entirely dedicated to them,” he said. The tournament will have a competitive framework with rules, judges and awards, he added.

The tournament features traditional games such as “Matarah”, “Anbar”, “Al Karabi, “Al Dahroui” and “Al Gaheef”, among others.

These games will be open to the public to participate, and participants will be selected via a draw based on available slots.

The event also features an exhibition of these games and treatments and remedies for game-related injuries.

Additionally it features a dedicated section for books related to folk literature, heritage, traditions and customs, in addition to food stalls, cafés and local artisan shops, Al-Neyadi added.
