AMEINAH ALZEYOUDI (ABU DHABI)
The Mukhwar is considered one of the finest and most beautiful traditional costumes in the UAE, and is part of the heritage that Emirati women have preserved for centuries.
The Mukhwar is characterised by its unique design, which reflects Emirati beauty and femininity. It reflects pride in national identity and heritage.
The garments are distinguished by their unique beauty, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern designs. They are typically made from luxurious fabrics such as silk and cotton, and adorned with handmade embroidery or golden threads, giving them an elegant and sparkling finish. Emirati women have been wearing the Mukhwar for centuries, and the costume has maintained its esteemed status among traditional garments.
It is worn on special occasions such as weddings, national celebrations and holidays. Over time, the Mukhwar has evolved to keep pace with changes in fashion without losing its connection to its traditional roots.
As the month of Ramadan approaches, the demand for Mukhwar increases significantly, as many women are keen to acquire them to wear during family iftars and social gatherings during this blessed month.
Indeed, the Mukhwar also reflects the festive nature of the holy month.
During Ramadan, shops and online stores compete to display the latest designs.
A Mukhwar can cost between Dh350 and Dh500, and takes about a week to complete.
Nada Al Yafei, a Mukhwar stockist, said in her talk about the increasing demand for this garment during Ramadan: "With the advent of Ramadan, we find that the demand for Mukhwar increases significantly. Women are keen to acquire it to wear it on family occasions such as Iftars and gatherings with family and friends. Mukhwar adds a touch of luxury and femininity and reflects the authentic Emirati heritage.
Fatima Al Hajri, another Mukhwar trader, added: "The month of Ramadan is the ideal time to acquire a Mukhwar, as demand increases significantly during this period. Women compete to choose the colours and designs that suit their tastes, and there is an increasing interest in Mukhwar, which is characterised by luxurious hand embroidery and special touches that add to a woman's appearance during this month."
The Mukhwar is not only considered traditional clothing but has become part of contemporary fashion.
These days, Makhawir (plural) are no longer worn on special occasions only, but have become part of everyday clothing that can be worn at ordinary social gatherings.
