By infusing modern tools and techniques into Arabic calligraphy, UAE-based artist Diaa Allam employs various mediums, including digital art and augmented reality (AR), in order to evolve this ancient art form and integrate it into daily life.
Allam’s background in urban planning has influenced his calligraphy projects. “It gave me a deep understanding of balance and flow — not just in how buildings or spaces interact but in art as well," he said.
Recognising that calligraphy requires a delicate balance of harmony and movement, he strives to ensure each stroke is deliberate and linked to the overall picture.
Delving into the challenges of creating 3D calligraphy while maintaining its elegance, he noted that it is all about bringing depth and a new dimension to the art.
“The challenge is to preserve the fluidity and elegance of Arabic calligraphy while adding layers that make the letters feel dynamic. AR is an exciting extension of that," he said.
Allam said that AI provides valuable inspiration, stressing the importance of the human touch in the creative process.
The use of AR technology enhances the interactive and immersive nature of artwork, ensuring its relevance and evolution in the digital world, he added.
Allam noted that he selects colours “based on the message and mood I want to convey".
Reflecting on his experience with the Guinness World Record for the Largest Glow in the Dark Mural, in Ras Al Khaimah, he said that it was “an unforgettable experience”.
“While the scale was impressive, what made it truly special was the message behind it — unity and hope. I convey core messages in my art through the flow of the script and the emotional resonance of the words I choose.”
Recounting his creative process, Allam said: “My work starts with a concept that resonates with the message I wish to convey. I sketch the basic forms, focusing on balance and flow. Incorporating modern elements enhances the art while maintaining the elegance of calligraphy.”
Allam spotlighted the Dubai Calligraphy Biennale as a significant milestone, featuring his artistic journey through various mediums and technologies, pushing him out of his comfort zone.
Deliberating the role of Arabic calligraphy in cultural heritage, he asserted that Arabic calligraphy is a vital cultural heritage, preserving its roots and relevance for future generations.
