Works collected by US-German art dealer Heinz Berggruen from the most important painters and sculptors of the 20th century went on display on Wednesday in France's capital, where his artists lived and where Berggruen had his gallery.

With nearly 90 key works by Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Paul Klee, Henri Matisse, Alberto Giacometti, and Paul Cézanne, the touring collection from Berlin's Berggruen Museum is now making a stop at the Musée de l'Orangerie in the French capital.

Under the title "Heinz Berggruen - A Dealer and His Collection," the exhibition focuses on his relationship with his artists, especially Picasso and Klee. The two artists account for the majority of the works presented in Paris, with over 40 and 20 pieces, respectively.

Paris represented the most important professional stage in the life of Berggruen, a native Berliner considered one of the most significant German gallery owners and art collectors of the 20th century.

In 1947, he founded his gallery there, which became one of the world's most renowned for modern art. In 1980, he gave it up to devote himself entirely to collecting works from a few select masters.

Since the beginning of the renovation works at the Berggruen Museum in Berlin in 2022, the collection has been on tour.

However, it is being shown in Paris for the first time on this scale. The exhibition is due to be on view until January 27, 2025. The reopening of Berlin's Berggruen Museum is planned for 2025-26.
