SARA ALZAABI (ABU DHABI)

The role of music in protecting the environment and the importance of environmental volunteering came to the fore at the second session of the Environment Friends Society's (EFS) annual summer camp, held virtually alongside International Youth Day.

In her presentation on the power of music for environmental balance, Dr. Eman Al Hashimi, the first Emirati female composer, advocated for the use of music to promote environmental balance.

Dr. Al Hashimi pointed out that music, by subtly impacting people's emotions and behaviours, leverages nature as a source of inspiration to deepen the human relationship with the environment.

She noted that "classical music has a beneficial impact on plant growth and wellbeing", and as a result deepens the human bond with nature and increases environmental awareness.

In her presentation, Dr. Al Hashimi also explored the effects of noise pollution on wildlife and ecosystems, the role of music in highlighting environmental problems, and its capacity to shape human behaviour and communication.

Dr. Al Hashimi said that music is beneficial for mental and physical wellbeing as it improves mood, memory, and motivation.

It also helps foster creativity and decrease anxiety.

She wrapped up by drawing attention to musical works about climate change and deforestation, highlighting their role in raising public awareness and inspiring efforts to protect the environment.

Environmental Volunteering
The annual camp, which coincided with International Youth Day, also discussed the crucial role of environmental volunteering.

Participants pointed out that environmental volunteering is deeply ingrained in the UAE's cultural traditions.

It is fundamental for the protection of natural resources, improvement of public health, elevation of environmental consciousness, strengthening of community ties, reduction of pollution, conservation of biodiversity, and achievement of sustainable development goals, the session heard.

Speaking to Aletihad, Dr. Ibrahim Ali Mohammed, Chairman of the EFS, said that the session's objectives focussed on youth awareness, and encouraged environmental education among families.

He noted that engaging youth in environmental volunteering instills a sense of social responsibility, supports national growth and nurtures a spirit of environmental wellbeing to create sustainable generations.

"Fostering a connection to the environment and raising awareness of the positive relationship between humans and nature highlight all aspects of environmental protection," Dr. Ibrahim said.

The EFS' summer camps impart valuable lessons that enhance self-confidence, foster community interaction, and build individual abilities, he said, adding that these activities encourage participants towards sustainable development, emphasising crucial behavioral patterns and life skills.
