SEHA, a subsidiary of PureHealth, the largest healthcare group in the Middle East, successfully treated a seven-year-old Syrian boy diagnosed with Systemic Onset Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (SOJIA), commonly known as Still’s disease. This rare and challenging health condition was overcome through advanced medical care provided at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC).

The young patient was diagnosed with SOJIA/Stills disease in August 2023, a complex condition that affects around 1.6 in 100,000 children globally and is often mistaken for infections or other diseases due to its symptoms. The disorder can cause prolonged or recurrent fevers, skin rash, stiff, swollen and painful joints, as well as problems with the heart, lungs, and blood.

Upon his admission to Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), a comprehensive investigation was conducted to rule out infectious and malignant causes. Initial treatment included high doses of steroids, which were gradually reduced. Since November 2023, he has been off steroids and is now effectively managing his condition with Biological medicine. Thanks to this targeted treatment, his disease is under control, and he is currently in remission.

SOJIA/Still’s disease is a rare form of juvenile arthritis; early diagnosis and prompt treatment are crucial in preventing long-term complications and improving quality of life. SEHA's leading expertise, state-of-the-art medical care and multidisciplinary approach played a pivotal role in the successful identification and management of this case.

Dr. Ayesha Rashed Al Muhairi, Pediatric Rheumatologist at SKMC, commented on the case: "This young patient's journey is a reminder of the resilience and courage of children facing chronic illnesses. Our ability to diagnose and treat SOJIA/Still’s disease early has been instrumental in his recovery. We hope his story will raise awareness about this rare disease and highlight the importance of early medical intervention.”

Dr. Al Muhairi added: “By sharing journeys such as these, we hope to educate and inspire other families facing similar challenges while raising awareness of complex diseases and the importance of early diagnosis.”

SEHA is committed to providing world-class healthcare services from the UAE. Its comprehensive network of hospitals and clinics is dedicated to improving patient outcomes and fostering a healthier community in line with PureHealth’s mission to enable longer fuller, healthier lives.
