COP28 Presidency embarks on extensive global tours to listen, communicate on climate action

ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD) - Since its establishment in 1971, the UAE has been committed to supporting global climate action efforts by ratifying both the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement.

Given the harsh climatic nature of the country characterised by high temperatures and water scarcity, the UAE considers climate change a challenge that needs to be addressed through joint efforts and international cooperation.

His Excellency Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, COP28 President-Designate, attended 11 previous editions of the Conference of the Parties (COP). He was appointed by the UAE leadership to head the state’s delegation at COP21, held in Paris in 2015.

As a regional leader in the energy and sustainability sectors, the UAE has succeeded in developing and diversifying its economy, creating new sectors, job opportunities, developing skills for future generations, and finding realistic and practical solutions to a global challenge.

The COP28 Presidency conducted extensive global listening and communication tours, which were considered among the largest ever undertaken by any COP Presidency.

The COP28 Presidency also held the first-ever series of open consultations to prepare the “Special Topics” programme during the two-week conference. Staying within 1.5°C The main objective of the COP28 Action Plan is to preserve the possibility of avoiding exceeding a 1.5°C rise in Earth’s temperature.

The global assessment for monitoring progress in implementing the goals of the Paris Agreement highlighted the need to reduce 22 gigatonnes of emissions before 2030. The COP28 Presidency has prepared an action plan based on four main pillars: Developing climate financing mechanisms; accelerating the achievement of a responsible, organised, logical, and fair transition in the energy sector; protecting people, lives, and livelihoods; and underpinning everything with full inclusivity.

The COP28 Presidency exerted intensive efforts in its preparations for the conference, mobilising the efforts of all countries and encouraging them to raise their ambitions, make new commitments, and fulfill previous obligations. The COP28 Presidency also adopted an innovative and comprehensive approach to developing the conference programme, which extends over two weeks.

Recovery and Peace

The programme highlights sectors and topics that stakeholders have consistently brought up during consultations, including topics fundamental to all COPs, as well as new topics such as health, trade, relief, recovery, and peace.

The Special Topics programme includes four axes that support effective and integrated implementation: technology and innovation, full inclusivity, support for communities most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, and climate financing.

Cooperation with All

The conference’s presidency collaborates with women, indigenous peoples, local communities, youth, people of determination, local actors, and religious organisations to ensure their active participation and contributions in all COP28 programmes and results.

The conference will likewise host a large number of members of parliaments, city mayors, and local leaders.
