ATHENS (dpa)
An SUV without a driver at the wheel crashed into a popular restaurant in the Kolonaki district of Athens, injuring at least 11 people, according to authorities on Sunday.
The accident occurred shortly after midnight local time.
Broadcaster ERTnews reported that all the injured were treated in hospital, with one person more seriously injured but not in a life-threatening condition. It appears the vehicle's handbrake had not been engaged.
At the time of the incident, restaurants were crowded with many guests sitting outside.
Eyewitnesses reported to the media that panic initially ensued as it was unclear whether it was an accident or an attack. The powerful vehicle reportedly gained significant speed on the steep street, preventing many people at the restaurant tables from reaching safety in time.
Initial findings by the traffic police indicate that the vehicle first knocked down a tree before crashing into the restaurant's outdoor area, where it struck the patrons.
Investigations into the exact course of the accident are ongoing.
