ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)
Abu Dhabi Police (ADP) issued a warning to the public about the dangers of falling for the tricks of beggars who use electronic means to obtain money.
They emphasised the importance of everyone working together to combat all forms of begging, including street begging, market begging, and electronic begging.
The ADP explained that beggars are using social media to achieve their illicit goals and utilising online platforms to acquire huge sums of money that far exceed what they can typically collect by begging in person at mosques, markets, and on the streets.
The police highlighted the increasing prevalence of electronic begging through technology and social media platforms, especially during Ramadan and holidays.
Beggars are using various tactics such as sending text messages, sharing humanitarian pictures, fabricating stories about helping orphans, providing medical treatment, or building mosques and schools in poor countries to entice people to send money.
Community members are urged not to send money or transfer funds to unknown individuals but instead cooperate with the relevent authorities to put an end to this phenomenon.
