LONDON (ALETIHAD)

The weekend saw Al Wathba Stallions Cup races being held for Purebred Arabians in three different cities in Europe as part of the 16th edition of the Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Racing Festival.

The filly Al Balqa triumphed at the Sluzewiec Racecourse in the Polish capital of Warsaw, and so did Al Hattab at the Bath Racecourse on the outskirts of London in England, and Farah Dagobio at the Caparelli Livorno Racecourse on the outskirts of Rome, Italy, which were held on Saturday.

The race series is held with the encouragement and support of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Presidential Court, with the aim of supporting and spreading purebred Arabian horse racing in Europe and America.

Al Balqa, owned by Talib Abdullah Al Mundhiri and trained by TM Borkowski, won the title over the distance of 1,800 metres in Warsaw among the field for three-years-old, with a total prize pool of €5,000. Jockey Szczepan Mazur had to draw on his local knowledge and Al Balqa responded well in the final 200 metres to deliver a strong performance with a time of 2:04:70 minutes.

With the participation of eight purebred Arabian horses aged four years and above, rated “0 to 60”, Al Hattab with Lewis Sanders onboard, clinched the London leg of Al Wathba Stallions Cup and claimed the prize money of £6,000. Owned by Jay Kelloway and handled by Peter Hammersleigh, the champion ran the distance of 2,600 metres in 3:11:17 minutes.

Elsewhere, the brilliance of the filly Farah Dagobio by Coglimo Santini Gagioli, and supervised by Camellia Trapassi, saw her respond well to Mario Sanna in the saddle in Italy. Farah Dagobio showed good turn of foot over the distance of 1,500 metres and clinch the prize of €6,050 among the field of three-year-olds.

The festival includes races for the crown jewel of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Zayed Cup, Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Cup, Al Wathba Stallions Cup, and the World Forum for Purebred Arabian Horse Racing.

The first races of the festival began last January, with new races being added this season in 2024 where 150 international races will be organised around the world, including races from the categories classified as Group 1 to 3.
