AMEINAH ALZEYOUDI (ABU DHABI)

In an interview with Aletihad, Emirati academic Fatima Bint Ali Al Mehdhar speaks about her new book "Contemporary Problems", which connects philosophy with current global affairs, showing the enduring relevance of thought in shaping our understanding of the self, society and the world.

AlMehdhar, who is currently pursuing a PhD in political science, explains what inspired the project: "The inspiration for this book emerged from an invitation extended by Dar Beit al-Falsafa (House of Philosophy) to contribute to their philosophy series, following my previous research article, 'The Impact of Avicenna on Roger Bacon' and my translation of the book 'Philosophy of Fear'.

"When presented with a range of potential topics, I chose the title 'What's the Problem?' - a title that originally encapsulated my desire to delve into contemporary philosophical issues. Later the book title was changed to reflect my discussion of the 'contemporary problems'.

"The core aim was to invite readers to explore the way philosophy tackles the challenges of modern existence, highlighting its relevance in the context of today's pressing societal and existential issues."

Her target audience is not academics or philosophy scholars. "The book is primarily aimed at non-specialist readers - individuals who are attuned to the complexities of contemporary life and who seek a philosophical lens through which to better understand these challenges".

Though it is written in an accessible and concise manner, the book aims to spark deeper reflection in readers, encouraging them to not merely consume the text but to engage in further inquiry.

AlMehdhar said: "The inspiration stemmed from a desire to confront the philosophical questions that emerge from the peculiarities of contemporary life.

"As the contemporary world becomes increasingly complex, it presents unique challenges to human understanding, challenges that philosophy is uniquely equipped to address to help make sense of the problems that we face today, from alienation to the crisis of meaning.

"This book provides a platform to reconnect philosophy with the contemporary moment, showing its enduring relevance in shaping our understanding of self, society, and the world.

"It focuses on contemporary problems such as consumerism and fragmentation of culture, reification, and post-modernism among others.

"By focusing on the pressing issues of the contemporary condition, it connects abstract philosophical discussions to real-world experiences it offers a novel perspective that invites readers to confront their own philosophical inquiries."

The book seeks to provide not just a theoretical understanding of these issues but also practical insights into how philosophy can contribute to resolving them.

She explains that the project was borne out of her passion for both philosophy and politics.

"During my undergraduate studies, I initially intended to major in philosophy, enrolling in various philosophy courses and reading extensively in the field. However, I eventually switched my focus to political science. Philosophy has always been a passion of mine and, back then, there seemed to be little vision for its future. Now, witnessing the emergence of numerous initiatives promoting philosophy brings me great joy."

AlMehdhar concluded: "In essence, the book strives to rekindle an appreciation for the reflective, contemplative life that philosophy encourages amidst a world that increasingly values the material and technological."
