ANWAR ABDELKHALEK (ABU DHABI) - In line with the UAE’s strategic initiative to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, ADNOC recently opened the region’s first ultra-fast pilot station for refuelling with green hydrogen, to test a fleet of emission-free hydrogen-powered vehicles.
The station, operated by ADNOC Distribution and established on a plot of land provided by Masdar City, produces clean green hydrogen from water using an electrolyser powered by a clean electricity grid.
The opening of the first-of-its-kind station is part of ADNOC’s ongoing efforts to support the UAE’s National Hydrogen Strategy, as the company continues to collaborate with local and international companies in the field of applying the latest low-carbon technologies and solutions that contribute to reducing emissions and achieving a responsible and fair transition in the energy sector.
Hydrogen is a clean energy carrier that does not produce carbon dioxide, from its production to its final use. The ultra-fast hydrogen refuelling station is the latest project of ADNOC Distribution in the transportation sector, following the launch of the E2GO project to establish and operate the necessary infrastructure for charging electric vehicles in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and across the country.
ADNOC initially allocated Dh55 billion to develop and accelerate low-carbon solutions and invest in new energies and emission reduction technologies to reduce the carbon intensity of its operations by 25% by 2030 and enable its ambition to achieve climate neutrality by 2045.
Abu Dhabi, represented by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), collaborates with Changwon City in Korea and the Korea Transport Institute to enhance the Emirate’s leading position in clean and sustainable energy production, reduce the carbon footprint, establish an environmentally friendly transport system, and sustainable infrastructure that enhances the quality of life in the Emirate.
The collaboration includes establishing the infrastructure for charging and operating hydrogen buses, setting and designing specifications for a hydrogen fuel station, preparing operating and maintenance procedures for hydrogen buses in Abu Dhabi, and exchanging expertise, ideas, and human resources between the parties as part of an expert exchange programme.
