ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)

Tadweer Group has commenced on-site works for its new Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Abu Dhabi, marking a significant milestone in the delivery of its EcoPark vision and the development of the emirate’s circular economy infrastructure.

The facility is being developed in partnership with Urbaser, the international environmental solutions company. A ceremony marking the commencement of on-site works was attended by Etienne Petit, Chief Executive Officer of Tadweer Group, alongside senior representatives from both organisations.

Petit said: “This is a significant step forward for the project and for Abu Dhabi’s circular economy ambitions. It reflects our focus on execution and our commitment to strengthening resource recovery at scale, supporting Abu Dhabi’s ambition to divert 80% of waste from landfill by 2031.”

Rafael Guinea, Waste Treatment General Director, Urbaser, said: “We are pleased to mark this milestone with Tadweer Group. Our focus is on bringing our waste treatment expertise to the delivery of a facility that supports Abu Dhabi’s resource recovery goals.”

Scheduled to commence operations in the second quarter of 2028, the facility will have the capacity to process 200,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste and 200,000 tonnes of commercial and industrial waste annually.

Equipped with automated sorting systems, artificial intelligence and advanced optical technologies, the facility will enhance material separation and recovery, directing valuable materials towards recycling and further processing.

The MRF will form a key component of Tadweer Group’s wider EcoPark vision, bringing together complementary waste treatment, recycling and resource recovery technologies within an integrated ecosystem.

This approach aims to maximise material recovery and create greater value from waste, supporting Abu Dhabi’s transition to a circular economy.
