ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)
The Urban Planning and Permits Centre (UPPC) at the Department of Municipalities and Transport has launched Emirate DNA, an urban and architectural initiative designed to strengthen the identity of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and guide how its identity is expressed through its buildings and public spaces.
Unveiled at LIVEX 2026, Emirate DNA establishes a coherent approach to urban and architectural identity across the emirate, drawing on Abu Dhabi’s culture, heritage and environment. It also recognises the distinctive landscapes, histories and culture of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra, supporting future development to reflect the distinctive character of each region within a coherent Emirate-wide approach.
Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of the Department of Municipalities and Transport, said: “As Abu Dhabi continues to grow and evolve, our urban and architectural identity must remain firmly rooted in the culture, heritage and environment that define the Emirate. Emirate DNA establishes a coherent approach to strengthen this identity, while recognising the distinctive character of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra. This will help ensure that Abu Dhabi’s development remains grounded in what makes each of our communities and places distinctive to the Emirate."
Emirate DNA translates this approach to urban and architectural identity into practical guidance for the built environment, including buildings and villa façades, pedestrian bridges and mosques, as well as paving, planting, shade structures, lighting, signage, benches and other urban furniture, playgrounds and other public facilities. These elements have a direct bearing on how an urban environment looks, feels and functions, contributing to public spaces that are liveable but also easily identifiable.
Abdulla Mohamed Alblooshi, Director General of the Urban Planning and Permits Centre (UPPC), added: “Emirate DNA provides a practical framework for translating Abu Dhabi’s identity into the built environment. It gives municipalities, developers, architects and planners a shared reference for considering Abu Dhabi’s identity and local context throughout the design and development process, ensuring that future development responds to its surroundings while strengthening Abu Dhabi’s urban identity.”
The initiative is being developed in phases. Al Ain has completed its high-level reference, demonstrating how local identity can be translated into design. Its colour palette draws inspiration from Al Ain’s sands, oasis and aflaj, while the patterns are drawn from the city’s heritage. At LIVEX 2026, visitors can see how these local influences will be practically translated into architecture and public design. Work is also progressing on Abu Dhabi and Al Dhafra.
Emirate DNA forms part of UPPC's wider role in guiding Abu Dhabi's long-term urban development. It supports the Department of Municipalities and Transport in planning, regulating and enabling the urban systems that support everyday life across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
