ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)
Deterrence and diplomacy are the twin pillars of the UAE’s approach to regional security, Dr Anwar Gargash, Diplomatic Adviser to the UAE President, said.
In a post on X, Dr Gargash said the meeting between His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit reflected the UAE’s approach based on deterrence and diplomacy.
Neither deterrence nor diplomacy can be effective without the other, Dr Gargash said.
“Deterrence strengthens the credibility of diplomacy, while diplomacy succeeds when pursued from a position of parity and capability. Together, they offer the best path towards achieving stable and sustainable regional security,” he added.
Noting the measured position adopted by the Iranian President, Dr Gargash said: “Throughout the prolonged crisis, President Pezeshkian expressed views and made statements characterised by balance and rationality—positions that cannot be overlooked at this critical stage.”
A WAM report said the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and the Iranian President discussed several regional and international issues of mutual interest.
They also underscored the importance of supporting efforts to ease tensions, promote de-escalation and strengthen regional stability, while advancing opportunities for peace and development for the peoples of the region, the report added.
